Fairfax County, Virginia, is expanding its speed camera program after a successful pilot aimed at improving road safety in school and work zones. Elovate is proud to support this initiative, providing technology and expertise to enhance traffic enforcement and protect community members.

Proven Results from the Pilot Program

The pilot, launched in February 2023, installed speed cameras in nine school zones. Data from the program indicates significant reductions in speeding:

  • At London Towne Elementary School, average speeds dropped from 36.71 mph to 27.62 mph, a 25% reduction.
  • South County High School saw speeds decrease from 33.68 mph to 24.49 mph, a 27% reduction.Ā

Between April 2023 and May 2024, over 20,000 speeding citations were issued, with 71% for drivers exceeding the speed limit by 10 to 14 mph.

Expansion Plans

Building on the pilot’s success, Fairfax County plans to install 50 additional speed cameras by June 2026, with a further 30 cameras anticipated in fiscal year 2027.

The expansion includes new installations in school zones and, for the first time, in a construction work zone on Fairfax County Parkway between Popes Head Road and Burke Center Parkway.Ā
Ā
As part of the latest phase, 10 new speed cameras have been activated near schools throughout the county and entered a 30-day warning period beginning June 3, 2024. These include installations at locations such as Groveton Elementary, Key Middle, and Lewis High School. During the warning period, drivers receive notices without fines, offering time to adjust to enforcement and raise awareness.Ā
